How Is A Dental Implant Procedure Performed?

Local anesthesia is given to the patient so as to remove the sensation of pain. The gum tissue needs to be removed for the placing of the dental implant. Usually, a cut is made across the peak and the gum is peeled so that the bone becomes visible. Next, a hole is made in the jawbone using drills. Then, the implant is placed in the marked area and a temporary healing abutment is placed. The implant becomes strong because the jawbone grows around it and holds it tightly. This part of the process takes a lot of time. It may take several months before the implant becomes completely fused with the bone. Once this is done, the abutment is removed and the crown is attached. A dental implant surgery takes about 45 minutes. However, it can take longer if multiple implants are done in the same surgery or a multiple teeth extractions are performed.

Important Things To Know About The Treatment

  • One must abstain from consuming solid foods or smoking after the surgery. The surgeon will generally recommend consumption of only soft food or fluids after the surgery.
  • There are a number of risks associated with endosseous implants like loss of jawbone, surgical infection, nerve and sinus damage and damage to any surrounding teeth. In some cases, it has been observed that the implant may never fuse with the bone. This can cause serious problems.
  • A detailed medical check-up needs to be conducted before the surgery and dental X-rays are sent to the doctor, so that he can decide on the correct treatment plan. This is most important in deciding whether a bone graft is needed or not.

  • Bruising, pain, swelling or slight bleeding can occur post surgery.

  • The success of a dental implant depends on a number of factors. Some of these are- thickness of the bone, position of the implant in the jawbone, size of the hole in the jawbone etc. Therefore, you should clearly voice any confusion or queries with the doctor and also inquire about any complications that can arise.
  • Dental implants can prevent the shrinking of the jawbone from where the teeth are missing.
  • You must visit your dentist for a routine check up to achieve best results from your surgery.
